Notes on measuring wall face area

Face area is what you see, not the wall's volume — do not multiply by wall thickness. For columns or four-sided pillars, enter each visible face as its own section. Deduct only openings that will not receive stone. Add 5–15% waste for cuts, breakage, and pattern layout.

What is a 'face square foot'?
The visible finished area of a wall or veneer surface, measured in square feet. Veneer, thin stone, and wall stone are sold by face square footage — not by weight or volume.
How do I handle corners?
Corner (L-shaped) pieces are sold by the linear foot, not by face square feet. Measure the outside corners of your project and buy one corner LF for every LF. Corners typically consume ~1 sq ft of your total face area per LF — deduct that from your flat coverage.
Should I subtract windows and doors?
Subtract any opening that will not be veneered. Do not subtract areas that will be trimmed around — the returns and jambs still need stone.
Chimneys, columns, and pillars
Enter each visible face as a separate section. A 4-sided chimney has 4 faces; three of them face out (front, left, right) and one faces the wall. If only one face is exposed above the roofline, only enter that face.
How much waste should I add?
Ashlar / random patterns: 10%. Ledgestone / stacked with tighter fit: 5–7%. Mosaic / irregular: 15%. Add another 5% if the mason will cut heavily around openings, arches, or curves.
