Boulder weight is an estimate, not a scale ticket. Real weights vary ±15% based on internal voids, moisture, mineral inclusions, and how the shape compares to a perfect rectangle. For truck, crane, and rigging capacity decisions, always use a certified scale ticket.
Which density should I pick?
Granite averages ~165 lb/ft³, limestone ~155, sandstone ~145, basalt ~180, and river rock varies widely. If your supplier publishes a density value, override the default with theirs.
How do I handle irregular boulders?
Measure the longest length, the widest width perpendicular to it, and the tallest height. Then apply a shape factor: rough rectangular 0.85, egg / rounded 0.65, flat / slab 0.75, tall column 0.80. The calculator does this automatically once you pick a shape.
How many boulders fit on a flatbed?
A standard 48-ft flatbed is rated at ~48,000 lbs (24 tons). Divide by your per-boulder estimate for a rough count, but confirm with your carrier — axle limits, straps, and staging often cap loads well before the weight limit.
